What is an AVIF file?

AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. Websites use it because it is often smaller than JPG and WebP at the same quality, but many apps can’t open it yet.

Why is the JPG bigger than the AVIF?

AVIF compresses much more efficiently than JPG, so the same image usually needs a larger JPG. If size matters, use Compress to Size afterwards.

My browser says it can’t open the AVIF. What now?

The conversion uses your browser’s own AVIF support, which current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari have. Update your browser, or try another one.

Are animated AVIF files supported?

Only the first frame is converted, because JPG can’t hold animation.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser and the image stays on your device.
