JPG to WebP FAQ

Is WebP better than JPG?

For websites, usually yes. WebP files are typically 25–35% smaller than JPGs of similar quality and can also be transparent. JPG is still the safer choice when you need to open the image in older software or send it to people who might.

Will converting JPG to WebP lose quality?

Both formats are lossy, so a small amount of detail can change. At 85–90% quality the difference is not visible in normal viewing. The conversion can’t restore detail already lost in the JPG.

Why is my WebP file bigger than the JPG?

This can happen with small or already heavily compressed JPGs, or at a very high quality setting. Try lowering the quality to 80% and compare the sizes again.

Can I use WebP images on my website?

Yes. All current browsers support WebP. If you also need to support very old browsers, serve a JPG fallback with the HTML <picture> element.

Is my photo uploaded to convert it?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, and the photo stays on your device.
