HEIC to JPG FAQ

What is a HEIC file?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container, a type of HEIF) is the photo format iPhones and iPads use by default since iOS 11. It stores photos in about half the space of JPG, but many apps and websites can’t open it yet.

Why is the JPG bigger than the HEIC photo?

HEIC compresses photos more efficiently than JPG, so the same photo usually needs a larger JPG file. If you need a smaller file, use Compress to Size after converting.

Does converting reduce the quality?

At the default setting the difference isn’t visible. JPG is a lossy format, so choosing a lower quality makes the file smaller but can show artifacts in fine detail.

Why does the first conversion take a moment?

Browsers other than Safari can’t read HEIC, so the first time you convert a photo, a decoder of about 500 KB (compressed) is downloaded from this site. After that it’s cached by your browser.

How do I stop my iPhone from saving HEIC photos?

Go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose “Most Compatible”. New photos are then saved as JPG. Existing photos stay HEIC, so you can convert them here.

Is my photo uploaded?
