How do I reduce the size of a WebP image?

Open it in the WebP Compressor and lower the quality. WebP images are often saved at a higher quality than needed, so 70–80% usually brings a noticeable saving with no visible difference.

Is WebP better than JPG?

For the same visual quality, WebP files are typically 25–35% smaller than JPG, and WebP also supports transparency. JPG remains useful when you need maximum compatibility with older software.

Does compressing WebP remove transparency?

No. Transparent areas remain transparent in the compressed WebP.

Are animated WebP images supported?

Animated WebP files can be opened, but only the first frame is kept in the result. We show a notice when an animated file is detected.

Is my WebP file uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser, and the image never leaves your device.

Why does compression take longer in some browsers?

WebP encoding is more demanding than JPG, and the speed depends on your device. Large images can take a second or two. Some older browsers cannot create WebP files at all; in that case we show a message.
