Good to know before converting

  • Safe for repeated edits

    Saving a JPG again and again adds compression artifacts each time. A PNG can be edited and saved repeatedly without further loss.

  • Expect a larger file

    PNG keeps every pixel, so the file is usually several times bigger than the JPG. That’s normal and doesn’t mean better quality.

  • No transparency added

    A JPG has no transparent areas, so the PNG won’t either. Removing a background requires an editing tool.

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. PNG preserves the image exactly as it is, but it can’t bring back detail that JPG compression already removed. The benefit is that no further loss happens when you edit and save.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the JPG?

JPG achieves small sizes by discarding detail; PNG stores every pixel. For photos, a PNG is often 3–10 times larger. Keep the JPG if you only need to share or display the photo.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

No. JPG files don’t contain transparency, so the background stays as it is in the photo.

When should I convert JPG to PNG?

When a site or app only accepts PNG, or when you plan to edit the image several times. For websites, converting JPG to WebP is usually the better choice.
