How do I reduce the file size of an image?

Open the image in the compressor, lower the quality slider (for JPG or WebP) and select “Compress image”. You’ll see the new size before you download it.

Does compressing an image reduce its quality?

JPG and WebP compression is lossy: it removes detail that is hard to see. Around 70–85% quality usually looks the same as the original at a much smaller size. PNGs are made smaller by reducing the number of colors; choose the Lossless level if every pixel must stay identical.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The image is read and compressed by your browser on your device. It is never sent to our server.

Why didn’t my image get smaller?

Some images are already heavily compressed, and saving them again at a high quality can make them larger. When that happens we show a notice so you can keep your original or try a lower quality.

Is photo information such as location removed?

Yes. Compressing re-creates the image from its pixels, so embedded metadata such as camera details and GPS location is not copied into the new file.

What is the maximum file size?

You can compress images up to 25 MB. Because the work happens on your device, very large images may be slow on older phones.
