How to create a favicon

  1. Choose a square logo or image (PNG with a transparent background works best), drag it here, or paste it.
  2. Choose whether it fills the square or is shown whole, add padding if the edges feel cramped, and pick a background.
  3. Select “Create favicons” and check the icons, including the 16 × 16 version in the tab preview.
  4. Download the ZIP, put the files in your site’s root folder and paste the HTML tags into your pages’ head.

The complete icon set

  • Every size that matters

favicon.ico with 16, 32 and 48 px, PNG favicons, a 180 px Apple touch icon, 192 and 512 px icons for Android, and site.webmanifest.

  • Crisp at 16 pixels

Icons are scaled down in steps from a 512 px master, which keeps small sizes sharp instead of jagged.

  • Ready to paste

The HTML tags are shown on the page with a copy button and included in the ZIP, so you don’t have to look up the right markup.

Favicon FAQ

What is a favicon?

The small icon shown in the browser tab, in bookmarks and in search results next to your site. Phones also use larger versions when someone adds your site to their home screen.

Which files do I get?

favicon.ico (16, 32 and 48 px in one file), favicon-16x16.png, favicon-32x32.png, apple-touch-icon.png (180 px), icon-192.png, icon-512.png, site.webmanifest and favicon-html.txt with the tags for your pages.

Where do I put the files?

In the root folder of your website, next to your home page (for example public_html on shared hosting). Then add the HTML tags to the head of every page, or to your site’s template.

What image works best?

A simple, square logo or symbol of at least 512 × 512 px, ideally a PNG with a transparent background. Fine text and thin lines disappear at 16 px, so a bold mark or a single letter usually works better than a full logo.

Why does the Apple touch icon have a background?

iPhones and iPads show transparent areas of this icon as black, so it is always saved with a solid background: your chosen color, or white when the background is transparent.

My new favicon doesn’t show up. What can I do?

Browsers keep favicons in their cache for a long time. Reload the page with a hard refresh, open it in a private window, or check that /favicon.ico opens directly on your site.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Everything, including the ZIP file, is created in your browser on your device.
