Is AVIF to PNG lossless?

The PNG keeps exactly the pixels of the AVIF. If the AVIF was saved with lossy compression, that earlier loss can’t be undone, but nothing further is lost.

Why is the PNG so much larger?

PNG keeps every pixel, while AVIF discards detail very efficiently. For a smaller file, reduce the colors with the PNG Compressor or convert to JPG with AVIF to JPG.

My browser says it can’t open the AVIF. What now?

The conversion uses your browser’s own AVIF support, which current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari have. Update your browser, or try another one.
