How to compress an image to a specific size

Always use the exact limit your form or website states. Without one, these ranges are a sensible starting point.

How do I reduce a photo to 100 KB?

Choose the photo, select 100 KB and press “Compress to this size”. The tool lowers the quality step by step until the file fits, keeping the best quality that’s still at or under 100 KB.

Why is my result a little smaller than the size I chose?

The tool aims at or just under the limit, never over it. It also counts 1 KB as 1,000 bytes, so the file passes forms that count a kilobyte as 1,000 or as 1,024 bytes. That’s why a 100 KB result may be shown as about 97 KB.

Will my photo get smaller in pixels?

Only if it has to. Quality is lowered first; if the file is still too big at the lowest useful quality, the width and height are reduced as well, and the result tells you the new dimensions. To control the dimensions yourself, use the Image Resizer first.

Can I compress a PNG to a specific size?

Yes. PNG is saved losslessly, so it can’t be squeezed to an exact size by itself; the tool saves the result as JPG or WebP instead. Transparent areas become white in a JPG.

What if the size I need is very small?

Very small limits such as 10–20 KB work best for small photos like passport or profile pictures. If a large photo can’t reach the size, you’ll see the smallest size that was possible and can choose a larger target or crop the photo first.

Is my image uploaded?

No. All compression runs in your browser, and the image never leaves your device.
